I Get Angry: Anurag Kashyap On Audiences Not Watching Films In Theatres, Praising Them Years Later

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has voiced frustration over how smaller Indian films struggle to secure adequate theatre shows, only to be praised years later on streaming platforms. He cited examples like his own Bandar and Imtiaz Ali's Main Vaapas Aaunga receiving limited theatrical presence while Hollywood releases dominate cinemas.
Kashyap admitted feeling upset when audiences praise his films after having seen them only on streaming platforms rather than in theatres. "I get angry, upset because people keep coming to me and talking about how they love this film and that film. I often ask them, 'Where did you see it?' and nobody has actually seen it in theatres," he told HT City.
The director recalled how the industry once supported smaller releases better, citing his 2014 film Ugly, which released alongside the blockbuster PK. He credited fellow filmmakers and distributors for ensuring his film received fair theatrical opportunities despite competing against a major release.
