Arunachal weightlifter barred from World Championships over China visa row
Charu Pesi, a weightlifter from Arunachal Pradesh, has been withdrawn from the upcoming World Championships in Ningbo following visa complications imposed by Chinese authorities. The Indian Weightlifting Federation made the decision after China's handling of his visa documents raised concerns.
The withdrawal reflects India's territorial integrity stand. China's practice of issuing "stapled visas"—documents that do not recognise Indian sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh—has previously affected athletes from the region and Meghalaya in international sporting events.
This development underscores ongoing tensions between India and China over border disputes and their impact on bilateral engagement, including sports competitions.
