30 tokay geckos rescued in Assam wildlife trafficking bust

Assam Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah announced the arrest of a suspected wildlife trafficker and rescue of 30 tokay geckos from Golaghat district. Personnel of the Bokakhat Range, working with Dimapur Customs officers, intercepted the trafficking attempt at Garmur on September 17 following specific intelligence.
The rescued lizards were released back into their natural habitat after obtaining court approval and completing legal procedures. The investigation is ongoing to trace the source and intended destination of the consignment and identify other potential accused.
Mallabaruah said the state remains committed to cracking down on illegal wildlife trafficking. "Assam's wildlife is not for sale," he stated, emphasizing efforts to ensure rescued animals are returned safely to the wild.
