Assam Police patrol in Mukroh village sparks border tensions with Meghalaya

Tensions escalated along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Monday after Assam Police conducted foot patrols in Mukroh, a disputed village spanning West Jaintia Hills district in Meghalaya and West Karbi Anglong district in Assam. A group of more than 20 Assam Police personnel entered the Phlong area without prior notification to Meghalaya Police, raising concerns among the Pnar community residents.
The incident follows recent friction when Mukroh residents and the village head rejected Assam government officials attempting door-to-door demographic enumeration, asserting that Mukroh falls under Meghalaya's jurisdiction. The Dorbar Shnong (Village Council) of Mukroh Pyllun has now written to Meghalaya Police seeking explanation for the unannounced patrol and requesting heightened security in the sensitive border area.
