AI traffic camera in Bengaluru fines rider for guitar, mistakes it for pillion passenger

A Bengaluru motorist was fined ₹500 by an AI-powered traffic camera that mistakenly identified his guitar as a pillion rider not wearing a helmet. After receiving the challan, the rider approached Bengaluru Traffic Police seeking correction of the error.
The incident has highlighted gaps in AI-dependent traffic enforcement systems used for automated violation detection. A senior traffic official acknowledged that AI systems improve with more data and training, but acknowledged the current limitations in distinguishing between objects and persons.
The traffic police are reviewing the case as the error raises questions about the accuracy and reliability of automated enforcement mechanisms in the city.
