Bhopal prioritises ₹2.93 crore industrial water pipeline for GIS 2027 amid 7,000 city leakages

Bhopal Municipal Corporation is prioritising a ₹2.93 crore industrial water pipeline project in Bandikhedi and Satgarhi ahead of the Global Investors Summit 2027. The Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation has requested 20 lakh litres of water daily for planned industries at these locations. BMC has prepared a detailed project report for laying 400-mm-diameter pipelines over 1.5 km from Kerwa Dam to supply water, with work expected to begin after tender completion.
The move has drawn scrutiny over water supply priorities, particularly given widespread pipeline leakages across the city. A March survey by the Urban Administration and Housing Development Department detected over 7,000 leakages in Bhopal alone, out of 62,000 reported across 16 municipal corporations in Madhya Pradesh.
The project comes after the Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the Bhagirathpura tragedy in Indore in January 2026 and directed municipal corporations to expedite separation of drinking water and sewage pipelines. The AMRUT 2.0 drinking water project completion was also expedited following Supreme Court directions, raising questions about whether prioritising industrial connections could delay citywide drinking water infrastructure improvements.
