BIS raises gold hallmarking fee to ₹75 from ₹45 ahead of festive season

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has raised the gold hallmarking fee to ₹75 per gramme from the existing ₹45, a 67 per cent increase effective ahead of the festive season.
The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) has expressed concern over the move and urged the government and BIS to immediately review the decision. The council requested that the existing charge be retained pending proper stakeholder consultation.
The fee hike comes at a time when demand for gold jewellery typically increases during festivals and weddings in India.
