BJP ally Rajbhar revives Uttar Pradesh division proposal

An ally of the BJP has revived the proposal to divide Uttar Pradesh into four smaller states. The idea, originally championed by the Mayawati-led BSP government, was placed before the Assembly in 2011.
The proposed divisions were: Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Paschim (Harit) Pradesh, and Awadh Pradesh. Each region has distinct political, cultural, and developmental characteristics that have fuelled periodic calls for separate statehood.
