BJP Names Debasish Sharma As Candidate For Nagaon Lok Sabha Bypoll

The Bharatiya Janata Party's Central Election Committee on Friday approved Debasish Sharma as its candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll in Assam. The Election Commission of India has scheduled the by-election for October 6, 2026, with vote counting set for October 9, 2026.

Debasish Sharma, a former Nagaon District Commissioner and administrative officer, joined the BJP on Tuesday along with journalists Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita. The three joined the party at a ceremony at BJP Assam Pradesh headquarters in Basistha, attended by Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia and senior party leaders.

Ahead of the bypoll, the Assam BJP is holding an extended executive meeting in Guwahati to discuss campaign strategy, the Seva Sankalp programme running from September 17 to October 17, and upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation elections.
