Chennai traffic diversion withdrawn after causing massive congestion on OMR

A traffic diversion introduced on Rajiv Gandhi Salai in Chennai on Wednesday to ease congestion instead caused severe tailbacks stretching over 3 kilometres, forcing the Greater Chennai Traffic Police to withdraw it within hours. The plan closed U-turns at Geetham Restaurant, Srivaram, and World Trade Centre, directing vehicles towards Perungudi Toll Booth to turn around. The closure of multiple turning points concentrated traffic at fewer locations, creating gridlock during peak hours.
Commuters reported commute times doubling, with some waiting 15-20 minutes at single turning points. Two-wheeler riders resorted to wrong-side driving to bypass congestion. Rajiv Gandhi Salai handles around 78,000 vehicles daily during peak periods. Access to public transport and ride-hailing services was also affected, prompting complaints on social media questioning the planning of the diversion.
