Demat account openings fall to 2.89 million in September amid market selloff
Demat account openings declined to 2.89 million in September, marking an 11.5% drop from August. The slowdown coincided with the stock market's most significant monthly losses in five months.
Despite the monthly setback, the September quarter recorded a strong performance with 9.04 million new demat accounts—the highest quarterly addition on record. The market sustained investor participation through robust initial public offerings and a steady base of 135 million unique investors across the Indian capital markets.
