E20 fuel push costs consumers ₹88,234 crore extra, benefits unclear

India's push towards E20 ethanol-blended fuel has imposed a significant financial burden on consumers over the past three years. Despite promised cost savings, the blend's lower mileage has resulted in consumers spending an estimated ₹88,234 crore extra, offsetting initial benefits.
The initiative's environmental and economic gains remain contested. Higher fuel consumption from E20 could paradoxically increase emissions rather than reduce them. Additionally, diverting crops to ethanol production raises concerns about food security and export capacity, complicating the policy's broader impact assessment.
