RBI's Liquidity Management Challenge as Diaspora Inflows Reach Record $133 Billion

India has received a record $133 billion in diaspora inflows, creating a liquidity surplus in the banking system. The inflow has pushed overnight money market rates below the RBI's 5.25% policy rate, prompting the central bank to drain over ₹1 trillion in liquidity through various measures.
The surge in foreign currency arrivals comes as food and oil prices continue to fuel inflation concerns across the economy. The RBI faces the dual challenge of managing excess liquidity while addressing price pressures that threaten to derail monetary stability.
Markets are increasingly pricing in further liquidity management actions by the Reserve Bank, with some analysts expecting a potential interest-rate hike in the coming periods as inflation remains a key policy concern.
