Has Tamil Nadu Entered the 'Vijay Era'? How the Actor-Turned-CM Is Redefining Politics Through Governance

For decades, Tamil Nadu politics revolved around two powerful Dravidian parties. Many believed no new political force could break their dominance. When actor C. Joseph Vijay announced his political entry in 2024, political experts largely dismissed his chances. Some predicted he could influence elections, but very few believed he could become Chief Minister.
That prediction has now been proven wrong.
After leading Tamilaga Vettri Kazagham (TVK) to a historic victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, Vijay has completed more than a month in office. While it is still too early to judge the long-term success of his government, one thing is becoming increasingly clear—his biggest political strategy is not making speeches, but creating a strong public image through quick decisions and visible governance.
This may be the biggest difference between Vijay and many traditional politicians.
Instead of spending his initial weeks defending his victory or attacking the opposition, Vijay has focused on sending simple but powerful messages that ordinary people can easily understand.
One of his first major announcements was providing 200 units of free electricity to households, benefiting crores of consumers across Tamil Nadu. Within days, he also launched district-level Anti-Drug Task Forces to crack down on narcotics while introducing the Singappen Special Task Force to improve women's safety.
These decisions may not solve every problem immediately, but politically they send an important message—that the government wants people to see action from Day One rather than wait for months.
Another decision that attracted significant attention was the closure of hundreds of liquor shops located near schools, colleges, places of worship and bus stands.
Whether people agree or disagree with the move, it reinforced Vijay's campaign promise that public spaces should become safer and more family-friendly. For a new government, fulfilling visible election promises quickly helps build public confidence.
However, governance is not judged only by welfare announcements.
Perhaps the biggest reason Vijay is dominating political discussions is his personal working style.
Unlike most Tamil Nadu leaders, who traditionally wear white veshti and shirt, Vijay has chosen a formal black suit and white shirt while attending the Secretariat. His appearance has generated debate, but it also reflects a deliberate attempt to project himself as a modern administrator rather than a conventional politician.
Reports that he reaches office on time every morning, spends long hours at work, insists on punctuality from bureaucrats and even prefers eating lunch quietly in his office instead of holding political gatherings have further strengthened this image.
These actions may appear symbolic, but symbolism often matters in politics.
People usually judge new governments not only by policies but also by the behaviour of the leader. A disciplined working style creates the impression that the administration itself will become more disciplined.
Another important aspect of Vijay's government has been its emphasis on administrative reforms.
The government has announced measures to modernise Amma Unavagam canteens, improve rural healthcare, strengthen anti-corruption mechanisms, support agriculture, expand digital governance and improve welfare delivery through technology.
Perhaps the most ambitious initiative is the Vetri Tamizhagam Vision Document, a detailed governance roadmap covering multiple departments with measurable targets. Alongside this, the government has also proposed a Citizen Privilege Card, a government services Super App and wider use of artificial intelligence in administration.
These initiatives suggest that Vijay wants to be remembered not only as a popular leader but also as a Chief Minister focused on administrative reforms.
Interestingly, Vijay has also adopted a different political approach towards the Central Government.
Although he continues to strongly raise Tamil Nadu's interests on issues such as fishermen's welfare, the Mekedatu project and industrial investments, he has simultaneously maintained working relations with New Delhi.
His meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and participation in the NITI Aayog Governing Council indicate that political differences need not prevent administrative cooperation.
This balanced approach has helped him avoid unnecessary political confrontation while keeping the state's interests at the centre.
Another development that attracted attention was praise from NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Lahiri for Vijay's long-term economic vision of expanding Tamil Nadu into a $1.5 trillion economy by 2035.
Positive remarks from a senior national policymaker gave additional credibility to the new government's economic roadmap and strengthened the perception that investors and industry are closely watching the new administration.
Still, several important questions remain unanswered.
Many election promises are yet to be implemented. Large welfare schemes require enormous financial resources, and sustaining them without increasing the state's debt will be a major challenge. Administrative reforms also take years to show measurable results.
Similarly, maintaining public enthusiasm will depend less on announcements and more on improvements in employment, investment, education, healthcare and law and order.
Political history shows that many governments begin with impressive momentum but struggle to maintain the same pace after the initial months.
That is why the coming year will be a far better indicator of Vijay's leadership than his first few weeks in office.
At present, however, one conclusion appears difficult to ignore.
Vijay has successfully changed the political conversation in Tamil Nadu. Instead of asking whether an actor can govern a state, people are increasingly discussing his policies, administrative style and governance model.
For any first-time Chief Minister, changing the public narrative so quickly is itself a significant political achievement.
Whether this early momentum ultimately transforms into long-term success will depend on how effectively his government converts promises into measurable improvements in people's daily lives. But for now, Tamil Nadu's newest Chief Minister has ensured that the focus has shifted from his past as a film superstar to his present as the state's most closely watched political leader.
