Global hedge funds face sharp losses as AI trades unwind
Global hedge funds experienced significant losses as investors unwound artificial intelligence-related trades in response to mounting inflation concerns and expectations of higher interest rates. The broad pullback from AI-focused positions has rippled across markets, with Asia-focused stock pickers bearing the brunt of the downturn.
According to Goldman Sachs data, Asia-focused hedge funds lost 6.8% in early October as the AI trade reversed course. Meanwhile, global fundamental long-short funds declined 2.9% through October 15. The sharp retreat marks a notable shift from the earlier euphoria surrounding artificial intelligence investments that had driven significant gains across multiple hedge fund strategies.
The unwinding reflects growing caution among institutional investors as they reassess risk exposure amid persistent inflation pressures and market expectations that central banks may maintain higher interest rates for longer. This combination has prompted many funds to trim positions that had benefited from the AI boom.
