Home Secretary, Police Chief Apologise to Supreme Court Over Delhi Protest Curbs

The Home Secretary and Delhi Police Commissioner have filed affidavits with the Supreme Court apologising over restrictions imposed during the 10 October protest called by the Chief Justice of India. The submissions came in response to a contempt notice issued by the apex court, which had found a 'brazen violation' of its 9 October order.
The Court had directed that no unregulated restrictions be placed on citizens exercising their right to protest on 10 October. However, the police imposed various curbs in the national capital on the day, prompting the Supreme Court to take cognisance of the apparent breach.
In their affidavits, both officials denied any wilful violation of the Court's directive, terming it an inadvertent procedural matter. The responses are expected to be examined by the bench as it considers the contempt charges.
