Humayun Kabir fields son Ghulam Nabi Azad for Rejinagar bypoll in West Bengal

Humayun Kabir, founder of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), has entered his son Ghulam Nabi Azad into the electoral fray for West Bengal's Rejinagar assembly seat. Azad filed his nomination on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The bypoll follows Kabir's decision to vacate the Rejinagar seat while retaining Navda after winning both in the state elections earlier this year.
In the previous election, Kabir defeated his nearest BJP rival by nearly 59,000 votes from Rejinagar. He was expelled from the Trinamool Congress following a controversy over a mosque foundation stone, after which he formed AJUP in December 2025. Azad acknowledged the challenge of matching his father's victory margin.
The Election Commission announced bypolls for both Rejinagar and Nandigram seats on Monday, September 7, 2026. Polling is scheduled for October 6, with vote counting on October 9.
