ICAR Completes Pigeonpea Genome Sequence, Paving Way for Better Crop Varieties
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has successfully sequenced the complete genome of pigeonpea, a major pulse crop. The newly developed T2T genome sequence contains 752.65 million base pairs of DNA assembled into 92 contigs, providing a comprehensive map of all 11 chromosomes of the plant.
This breakthrough is expected to accelerate the development of improved pigeonpea varieties with better yield, disease resistance, and nutritional quality. The complete genome sequence will serve as a valuable resource for plant breeders and researchers working on enhancing crop performance and addressing agricultural challenges.
