IIT Bombay Student's Parents Detained Before Planned Hunger Strike

The parents of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode were detained by Mumbai Police in Bhandup on Thursday morning as they travelled to the institute's Powai campus to begin a hunger strike. According to their lawyer, Ravindra and Sonali Wakode were held at Bhandup police station for about an hour before being taken to a government guest house to meet officials of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission. They were later released.
Sahil, a second-year BTech student, died by suicide on September 18. His parents have alleged he faced caste-based discrimination and harassment at the institute. They have demanded action against those named in the registered FIR and had announced a hunger strike if arrests were not made in the case.
