India's auto sales surge in September on passenger, commercial vehicle demand
India's automotive sector delivered a mixed performance in September, with strong passenger and commercial vehicle sales offset by weakness in rural-facing segments. Domestic passenger-vehicle sales jumped 21.4% year-on-year to 4,63,081 units, while Tata Motors' commercial-vehicle volumes rose 31%. However, Mahindra & Mahindra's tractor sales fell 21% and Bajaj Auto's domestic two-wheeler sales declined 12%, highlighting uneven demand patterns across the industry.
The weakness in rural-facing segments was driven by a below-normal monsoon, with the June-September monsoon registering 12.6% below normal this year. Mahindra & Mahindra's tractor sales fell to 52,100 units year-on-year, while Escorts Kubota's tractor sales declined 16.7%. Analysts noted that the strong passenger-vehicle growth also reflected a low base from last year, when GST rate cuts took effect only on September 22. According to industry observers, softer growth in passenger vehicles and two-wheelers largely reflected delayed festive season timing and elevated channel inventories rather than underlying demand weakness.
This year's festive calendar is spread out, with Navratri and Dussehra falling in October and Dhanteras and Diwali in November. While commercial vehicles remain supported by freight, infrastructure, and fleet replacement demand, rural stress from the weak monsoon continues to weigh on tractor sales, presenting a near-term challenge for the sector.
