India's Black Cardamom Industry Faces Crisis as Nepal Dominates Global Market
India's black cardamom industry, a cornerstone of Sikkim's economy, is facing a severe crisis driven by declining plantation health, persistent crop diseases and changing climate patterns. The situation threatens the livelihoods of thousands of farmers who depend on the crop for their income.
Once the world's largest producer of black cardamom, India has steadily lost its dominant position in the global market. Nepal has now emerged as the leading producer, capturing a significant share of the estimated $480 million international market. This shift marks a critical turning point for Indian farmers and the regional economy.
To combat the decline, the Sikkim government is taking proactive measures by supporting scientific research initiatives and developing improved planting material. Efforts are underway to identify and cultivate disease-resistant varieties that can withstand emerging agricultural challenges. These interventions aim to restore vitality to the state's black cardamom crop and help farmers recover their competitive edge in global trade.
