India's discarded EV batteries could unlock ₹1 lakh crore in minerals by 2041: Study

A study by the Council for Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) has found that end-of-life electric vehicle batteries in India could represent a significant economic opportunity. The research estimates that retired EV batteries will hold ₹1.01 lakh crore in recoverable minerals by FY2040-41.
The study highlights the potential for battery recycling and mineral recovery as India's EV adoption accelerates. Recovering valuable materials from discarded batteries could reduce dependence on virgin mineral extraction and support a circular economy in the energy sector.
