India's external debt rises to $778.2 billion in June quarter

India's total external debt increased by $15.4 billion to reach $778.2 billion in the June 2026 quarter, according to RBI data. Despite the rise in absolute debt levels, the external debt-to-GDP ratio showed improvement, declining to 20.8 percent.
Long-term obligations grew to $624.7 billion, while short-term debt remained at 19.7 percent of total external debt. The marginal improvement in the debt-to-GDP ratio suggests India's economic growth is keeping pace with rising external obligations.
