Hosting Olympics would be generational opportunity for India: Sports Minister
Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has called hosting the Olympics a generational opportunity for India as the country prepares to present its bid for the 2036 Games to the International Olympic Committee's Future Host Commission at the end of this month. The IOC confirmed on Tuesday that India, Germany, Qatar, and Turkiye are among seven countries with stated interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics and have been invited to present their Games projects to the commission.
Mandaviya stated that India's ambition for 2036 is rooted in the belief that sport can help shape the nation's future. According to him, hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games would inspire millions of young Indians to participate in sport, strengthen healthier and more active communities, and create new opportunities for youth across education, employment, and social development. Ahmedabad has been selected as India's city of choice to host the quadrennial event, which has never been held in the country before. India submitted its Expression of Interest to host the Games in 2024.
Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha said the IOA feels deeply honoured by the IOC's recognition of India's aspirations. The country's bid will revolve around the vision of "Rising Together," reflecting India's commitment to unite the nation's energy, ambition, and diversity behind a shared Olympic dream while contributing to the Olympic Movement's goal of reaching new generations and communities worldwide.
