India's Hair Exports Hit by Smuggling to China, Creating Market Shortage
Indian hair has become a highly valued commodity in global markets, recognised for its quality and natural colour. However, the sector faces a critical challenge as raw hair is smuggled to China, disrupting supply chains and creating domestic shortages.
China dominates the processing and wig-manufacturing segment of the hair trade, while India remains largely a raw material exporter. The $940 million trade is constrained by the limited market for processed hair within India itself, forcing the country into a supplier role despite producing the raw material.
The smuggling of unprocessed hair to Chinese buyers undermines India's ability to develop a robust domestic processing industry. This structural imbalance leaves Indian producers dependent on external markets and vulnerable to supply disruptions, while China captures the higher-value segments of the global hair and wig trade.
