India's sugar stocks adequate for Diwali, but 2027 supply concerns loom

India's sugar inventories are expected to remain adequate through the Diwali festive season, posing no immediate supply risk to consumers. However, the balance sheet for 2026-27 presents a tighter picture, with considerably reduced buffers compared to current levels.
Analysts point to mid-2027 as the critical juncture when genuine inflationary pressures on sugar could materialise. The current festive period will not test India's sugar management capacity significantly, but the coming financial year will present steeper challenges.
The narrowing surplus reflects both production dynamics and domestic consumption patterns. Policymakers face the prospect of managing sugar availability and pricing with limited room for manoeuvre in the latter half of 2027, marking a potential shift from the relative comfort of the current season.
