India's September goods exports jump 23%, imports slow to ease trade deficit

India's merchandise exports expanded 23% year-on-year in September, reaching $44.4 billion, driven by strong performance in electronics, petroleum products, and engineering goods. Meanwhile, imports grew at a slower pace of 8%, bringing the overall trade deficit down to $30.21 billion.
The divergent growth rates between exports and imports underscore improving trade dynamics. Gold imports declined sharply by 81.27%, a significant factor in restraining the overall import bill. The surge in outbound shipments reflects sustained momentum in India's export sector during the second quarter of the current fiscal year.
The narrower trade deficit signals improved external sector health, though economists will monitor whether the export gains can be sustained and whether slower import growth reflects genuine demand moderation or temporary base effects.
