India's women's hockey team wins Asian Games gold, secures LA Olympics spot

India's women's hockey team completed a remarkable turnaround under head coach Sjoerd Marijne, winning gold at the Asian Games and securing direct qualification for the Los Angeles Olympics. The victory represents a significant turnaround for the squad, which faced considerable uncertainty just months earlier after losing the Asian Cup final to China 4-1 in September 2025.
Following that setback and the departure of head coach Harendra Singh, Hockey India reinstated Marijne in January 2026 to lead the team through World Cup qualifiers. Despite being ranked ninth in the world, the squad—featuring 10 first-time World Cuppers—exceeded expectations by reaching the World Cup semifinals in the Netherlands and Belgium. A disciplined defensive display throughout the tournament proved crucial, culminating in India's fifth-place finish, its best result since the inaugural World Cup in 1972. The team's performance was bolstered by a triumphant FIH Nations Cup campaign in New Zealand, which earned India a spot in the 2026-27 Pro League following its relegation in 2025.
Marijne's strategic faith in youth and emphasis on defensive solidity transformed the team's mindset, with players recognizing the need to compete on merit against every opponent regardless of ranking. The Asian Games gold medal caps a year of steady progression and positions Indian women's hockey on the global stage heading into the LA Olympics.
