Indore's Sanitation Workers Launch Strike Over Pending Demands

Sanitation workers in Indore launched a strike on Monday, gathering at the Municipal Corporation headquarters to demand permanent employment and better working conditions. The unions warned of a complete shutdown of sanitation services from Tuesday. Workers sought permanent status for all employees, recruitment of 5,000 additional permanent workers, equal pay for equal work, job security for family members in case of death or medical incapacity during duty, and abolition of the NGO employment system.
Workers staged protests including a symbolic demonstration where women sanitation staff removed their bangles and threw them at officials' chambers. Maya Pathrod, a 20-year veteran worker, highlighted that despite earning only Rs 10,500 monthly, she remains unregularised. The union leaders said workers would continue sit-ins at Regal Square until their demands were addressed.
The Indore Municipal Corporation has begun contingency arrangements, with additional workers deployed for sanitation services. Officials stated they would address demands that fall within the civic body's purview, though no senior official met the protesting workers on Monday.
