Indore Water Tragedy: Opposition Leader Demands ₹10 Lakh Compensation, Probe into Civic Failures

Indore's Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar on Friday questioned the Madhya Pradesh government over the Bhagirathpura contaminated water tragedy and judicial inquiry findings. He said the incident raised serious concerns about safe drinking water, administrative accountability and civic infrastructure.
According to the judicial commission report cited by Singhar, drinking water supplied in Bhagirathpura was contaminated and unfit for consumption, with sewage entering the pipeline identified as a major cause. The commission examined 36 deaths and linked 22 to contaminated water. Singhar questioned why the commission was denied important engineering records including layout plans and pipeline alignment maps.
Singhar demanded implementation of the commission's recommendations, including ₹10 lakh compensation for families of the deceased and financial and medical assistance for affected patients. He also raised questions over delays in sewage pipeline work, citing a file pending 66 days for the mayor's signature, and sought clarity on administrative responsibility and timeline for implementing recommendations.
