Insurers brace for higher crop insurance claims across three states

Insurance companies operating in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka face mounting pressure from crop cover claims as drought-like conditions spread across farming regions. In Maharashtra alone, insurers' financial liability is expected to be capped at Rs 1,540 crore, beyond which the state government would assume responsibility for additional claims.
The Maharashtra government has already declared drought-like conditions in 265 talukas, signalling significant crop losses this season. Similar concerns are emerging in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, where agricultural distress from dry spells threatens widespread damage to standing crops.
The potential surge in claims underscores the strain on the crop insurance ecosystem during severe weather events. As insurers approach their liability thresholds, state governments are positioned to step in with additional relief, marking a shift in risk-sharing between private insurers and public authorities during natural calamities.
