IUML breaks ground as Fathima Thahiliya becomes first woman MLA

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has fielded its first woman MLA following Fathima Thahiliya's victory in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections. The development marks a significant departure from the party's historical practice of fielding women only in non-competitive seats.

Thahiliya's win challenges longstanding criticism that the IUML has not prioritized women candidates in strong or winnable constituencies. Her election signals a potential shift in the party's approach to gender representation in electoral politics.
