JMM Backs Alliance Formula, Fields Single Candidate For Jharkhand Rajya Sabha Polls

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has opted for a consensus approach in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections by announcing only one candidate, a move that significantly reduces the possibility of friction within the ruling alliance in the state.
The party selected senior legislator Baidyanath Ram as its nominee for one of the two seats going to polls. The decision signals a shift from earlier indications that the party might stake claim to both vacancies, a scenario that could have complicated the alliance's electoral calculations.
The development comes after recent unease between alliance partners over candidate selection. Discussions within the ruling camp had intensified after Congress announced its nominee without a broader consensus, leading to speculation that the JMM could adopt a more aggressive strategy in the election.
However, the latest decision indicates that alliance considerations ultimately outweighed political differences. Party leaders suggested that maintaining coordination among partners was crucial, particularly when the numbers in the Assembly strongly favour the ruling coalition.
With the nomination of Baidyanath Ram and Congress already fielding its candidate, the alliance is now expected to enter the June 18 Rajya Sabha contest from a position of strength. Political observers view the move as an effort to prevent unnecessary divisions and ensure both seats remain within the coalition's reach.
The ruling alliance, led by Hemant Soren, currently commands a comfortable majority in the state Assembly, giving it a clear advantage in the election. A multi-cornered contest within the coalition could have altered the arithmetic and potentially benefited the opposition.
