Harry Kane Scores England's First Goal After Controversial Penalty Retake Against Croatia

England captain Harry Kane scored his country's first goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026, but only after a VAR review handed him a second chance from the penalty spot against Croatia. Kane's initial effort was saved by goalkeeper Dominik Livaković, who was penalised for moving off his line before the shot. Kane then converted the retake.
The penalty was awarded after England won a corner. Noni Madueke reacted quickest inside the box to beat Luka Modrić before being brought down. Kane's first attempt saw Livaković guess correctly and push the ball away. However, VAR determined the keeper had infringed, sparking protests from Croatian players and debate over the decision.
