Kashmir's GI-tagged products seek export markets as authenticity concerns linger

At least 25 products from Kashmir, including handicrafts, saffron and agricultural goods, have received geographical indication (GI) tags to protect their origin and quality. These tags are intended to boost their market value and support local producers.
However, despite GI certification, Kashmiri exporters face significant obstacles in accessing international markets. Testing delays and concerns over authenticity verification remain key challenges that slow down the export process and limit the global reach of these products.
The GI status provides legal protection against imitation, but the infrastructure and certification mechanisms needed to meet international standards require strengthening. Producers and exporters are seeking faster clearance processes and more robust quality assurance systems to capitalize on the GI advantage in overseas markets.
