Ladakh observes shutdown on first anniversary of September 24 violence

Ladakh observed a shutdown on Wednesday marking the first anniversary of September 24 violence that claimed four lives during protests over statehood and Sixth Schedule demands. Shops and businesses remained closed in Leh and Kargil, with thin traffic affecting normal life. The day was observed as "Martyrs' Day" with tribute programmes and remembrance events.
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena approved withdrawal of criminal cases against 20 people booked in connection with the violence. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk led a symbolic 'padyatra' in Leh, covering around 20 km to reach Shaheed Memorial Park. Wangchuk announced September 24 will henceforth be observed as Shaheed Diwas.
The march, organised by Apex Body Leh and Kargil Democratic Alliance, saw limited participation due to weather conditions. Organisers said they deliberately kept the commemoration local-focused rather than scaling up appeals beyond Ladakh.
