Liquor offences account for 33% of crimes in Madhya Pradesh

Liquor-related offences continue to dominate crime statistics across Madhya Pradesh, accounting for 33% of all cases registered in the state. Over the past three years, while the overall crime count has declined—from 4.94 lakh cases in 2023 to 4.35 lakh in 2025—violations under the Excise Act have remained consistently high at around one-third of total crimes.
Recent incidents underscore the severity. At least 32 people died from consuming spurious liquor in Banda, Sagar district. In 2025 alone, more than 80,000 cases involved roadside consumption, liquor transport, and similar violations. The state has amended its Excise Act to impose capital punishment and life imprisonment for deaths caused by toxic or adulterated liquor.
