Lucknow Fire Aftermath: Kanpur Seals 22 Coaching Institutes in Major Safety Crackdown

The deadly fire incident in Lucknow has triggered a sweeping safety enforcement drive in Kanpur, where authorities have sealed 22 coaching institutes following inspections that revealed alleged violations of building safety and fire norms.
The action was initiated by the Kanpur Development Authority after the tragic deaths of two young professionals from Kanpur who were among those killed in the Lucknow blaze that tore through a multi-storey commercial building. The incident has intensified scrutiny over unsafe coaching hubs operating across the region.
The victims, identified as Sanyam Vij (28) and Suraj Bhan Singh (25), were working at an animation studio located inside the building where the fire broke out. Both were known to be close friends and had been working in Lucknow for professional opportunities in the creative field.
Following public outrage and rising concerns over regulatory lapses, authorities in Kanpur launched a large-scale inspection drive in the Kakadeo coaching district, one of the city’s busiest education hubs. Teams examined institutes for compliance with fire safety systems, structural approvals, and emergency exit requirements.
During the crackdown, officials sealed 22 coaching centres, including several prominent institutes such as Physics Wallah, Workspace, Mahendraraj, and Sanjeev Rathore Chemistry, citing alleged violations. Authorities indicated that the inspection drive will continue across other educational clusters, with further closures likely if safety breaches are identified.
Officials stated that the operation is part of a broader effort to prevent a repeat of the Lucknow tragedy, where poor evacuation planning and building safety issues are believed to have contributed to the high death toll. The move has sent shockwaves through the coaching industry in Kanpur, where thousands of students attend daily classes in densely packed buildings.
However, the crackdown has also sparked criticism from local residents and students, who questioned why such inspections are often conducted only after major accidents. Many argued that continuous monitoring and stricter enforcement could have prevented unsafe conditions from developing in the first place.
The tragedy has deeply affected the families of the two Kanpur victims. Relatives of Sanyam Vij said the family was already coping with the recent death of his grandmother when they received news of his passing in the fire. He was reportedly doing well professionally, and marriage discussions were also underway.
Suraj Bhan Singh’s family also expressed grief, noting that he had lost his father earlier and had been supporting his family while working in Lucknow. He frequently travelled between Kanpur and Lucknow for work commitments.
Relatives of Sanyam also raised concerns about safety systems inside the building, alleging that automatic sensor-based exit mechanisms failed during the fire, making evacuation extremely difficult. Many victims reportedly struggled to escape as thick smoke filled the structure, leading to suffocation.
Authorities have said that further inspections will continue and strict action will be taken against establishments found violating safety regulations, as pressure mounts to overhaul fire safety compliance in commercial and educational buildings across Uttar Pradesh.
