Madhya Pradesh to source additional power from Punjab and Uttar Pradesh amid deficit

Madhya Pradesh, previously a power surplus state, will now source additional electricity from Punjab and Uttar Pradesh to manage rising demand amid supply constraints. The state is grappling with a power deficit earlier than anticipated, with demand surging a fortnight ahead of the expected November increase.
The shortfall stems from multiple factors: deficient rainfall has reduced hydroelectric generation, coal supplies remain tight, and several thermal power plants are experiencing technical malfunctions. These combined pressures have forced the state to seek external power supplies to meet growing consumption.
The development marks a significant shift for Madhya Pradesh, which historically maintained power surplus status. Officials attribute the early demand surge to weather patterns and infrastructure challenges, necessitating interim arrangements with neighbouring states to ensure stable power supply.
