Madhya Pradesh THR Plants Face Heavy Losses As Rates Remain Frozen Since 2018-19

Seven plants operated by the State Rural Livelihood Mission in Madhya Pradesh have suffered significant financial losses, primarily because Take Home Ration (THR) rates have not been revised since 2018-19, while production costs have surged due to rising raw material prices linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis. Packaging costs for THR packets have doubled, straining plant finances.
According to an SRLM officer, outstanding dues reached Rs 302 crore last year and may climb by another Rs 60 crore following a fresh audit. The Women and Child Development Department, which procures around 9,000 metric tonnes of THR monthly for anganwadis, has struggled with payment releases, forcing suppliers to halt deliveries. The SRLM has indicated reluctance to continue its supply contract beyond June 30.
The government is exploring alternative arrangements for THR supply as the current system becomes financially unsustainable.
