Manipur tribal MLAs' panel seeks state funding for hill village authorities

The Hill Areas Committee (HAC) of Manipur Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution urging the state government to provide financial assistance to village authorities in hill districts. Village authorities, constituted under the Manipur (Village Authorities in Hill Areas) Act 1956, should receive funding similar to Panchayati Raj Institutions, the committee opined.
The resolution was adopted during a HAC meeting on September 18, after a gap of over two years. The committee comprises all 20 MLAs elected from hill districts. The latest meeting marked a rare joint gathering of Naga and Kuki legislators on a common platform amid ongoing communal tensions in Manipur.
