Nagaland child rights body flags infrastructure gaps, staff shortages

The Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR) has highlighted inadequate infrastructure and insufficient staffing as major obstacles to effective child protection in the state. During a review meeting with Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav on Thursday, commission members flagged gaps in facilities for children with mental health issues, substance abuse problems and disabilities.
The NSCPCR called for additional members, regular staff and enhanced grant-in-aid to strengthen its operations. Since 2023, the commission has monitored implementation of key child protection laws including the Juvenile Justice Act, POCSO Act, Right to Education Act and Child Labour Act across Nagaland.
The body has conducted awareness programmes with tribal bodies, village councils and schools, inspected child care institutions, and facilitated coordination among police, judiciary, social welfare and education departments. It also plans to establish child-friendly rooms in courts and police stations.
