Nagaland commissions irrigation system for winter crops in Kezoma village

The District Agriculture Office, Kohima, commissioned water sprinklers and pumps at Kezoma village on Wednesday to facilitate irrigation for winter crops. The initiative included a demonstration on equipment use and related farming techniques.
District Agriculture Officer Kekhrieletuo Yhome emphasized the need to sustain farming among younger generations, noting that modern practices and appropriate technology are essential to reduce labour-intensity while retaining beneficial traditional methods. He highlighted that farmers face changing climatic conditions and prolonged dry spells, making irrigation support crucial during dry seasons. The sprinkler system uses lightweight pipes covering approximately 150 feet per unit and enables efficient irrigation at 10-day intervals.
Kezoma Baptist Church, which received the equipment, committed to making it available to the broader village community. The Deacon Board chairman noted that around 80 percent of villagers are farmers and acknowledged the Agriculture Department's continued support through machinery, improved practices and training.
