Nagaland's NTeT Teacher Test Raises Questions on Recruitment Consistency

Nagaland's Department of School Education has notified compulsory retirement for teachers unable to clear the Nagaland Teacher Eligibility Test (NTeT) by 31 August 2028. However, this raises concerns about consistency, as the state has not conducted open recruitment for Primary Teachers in over a decade.
Similar directives on teacher qualifications were issued in 2017 and 2018, requiring teachers without B.Ed. and D.El.Ed. qualifications to face termination. RTI information subsequently showed appointments of unqualified persons even after these directives, suggesting incomplete implementation. The government has not clarified what has changed or why this latest notification should be treated differently.
Additionally, the NTeT framework differs from CTET, which is required for Central Government teacher recruitment. With no regular avenue for fresh teacher recruitment established by the state, questions remain about where NTeT-qualified candidates would be employed and how the two-language criteria of CTET would affect Nagaland candidates.
