Western Sumi panel seeks clarity on oil exploration, revenue sharing in Nagaland

The Western Sümi Area Oil & Natural Resources Committee submitted a representation to Nagaland's chief minister seeking clarity on oil and natural gas exploration in the state. While supporting the government's push for resource development, the committee raised concerns over transparency, fairness and equitable outcomes for indigenous people, urging public disclosure of all Memorandums of Understanding signed for exploration or extraction.
The committee highlighted revenue disparities, noting that Assam generated Rs. 9,903.63 crore as its state share from eight drilling points in the Disputed Area Belt between 2017 and 2022. It sought details on Nagaland's revenue-sharing modalities and whether the state received its rightful share. The committee also proposed establishing an oil refinery and gas plant at Niuland and Ganesh Nagar to promote local employment and economic growth.
WSAONRC reiterated commitment to safeguarding Naga constitutional rights under Article 371A, particularly over land and natural resources, urging the government to ensure development does not compromise transparency or local interests.
