Youth groups demand judicial probe into alleged wildlife enforcement misconduct in Nagaland

The Western Chakhesang Youth Organisation (WCYO) has called for an independent judicial inquiry into the alleged detention of wildlife offence accused Vezhoto Hesuh and a reported demand for Rs 1 lakh in connection with the case. WCYO president Wekupe Therie demanded suspension of the officer allegedly involved and a time-bound inquiry to establish facts. The organisation also sought written disclosure from the forest department detailing the alleged offence, statutory provisions, and legal basis for action.
Western Naga Youth Forum (WNYF) president Niesapa Soho questioned the detention based on a photograph with an animal and the alleged fine, calling them "questionable and condemnable." Major (retd) Boktiba Jamir raised concerns about the application of wildlife laws against traditional Naga customary practices protected under Article 371(A), particularly regarding use of hornbill feathers and animal bones.
