NGT Orders Action Against Bhopal Municipal Corporation Over Environmental Violations

The National Green Tribunal's Central Zone Bench in Bhopal has issued a strict order against environmental violations in the city. A joint inspection found seven mature trees at a private plot in Civil Lines with drilled holes and chemical residue, indicating possible poisoning. The NGT directed the Bhopal Municipal Corporation and Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board to fix responsibility and determine environmental compensation if tree damage is confirmed.
The tribunal also found untreated wastewater being discharged into the Lower Lake via Banganga nullah, with 8–10 MLD of sewage generated daily against a 10 MLD treatment plant expected by December 2027. The MPPCB was directed to calculate environmental compensation against the BMC for the discharge. Additionally, the State Wetland Authority was asked to verify alleged violations of Wetland Rules 2017 and report within 30 days. The next hearing is scheduled for September 28.
