NGT Seeks Responses on Illegal Plastic Factories Endangering 2 Lakh Bhopal Residents

The National Green Tribunal has initiated suo motu proceedings against approximately 50 illegal plastic factories operating in Bhopal, citing serious health and environmental risks to nearly 2 lakh residents. The tribunal has sought detailed responses from the Madhya Pradesh government, Central Pollution Control Board, Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board and Bhopal Municipal Corporation within two to three weeks, with the next hearing scheduled for October 29.
The Kabadi Khana area has emerged as a major hub for illegal plastic recycling, with over 50 units processing plastic waste into granules in narrow lanes. The operations pose significant hazards, with fires breaking out at least twice weekly during summer. Pollution levels in the area are among the city's highest, with PM10 readings reaching 225-250, while open e-waste dismantling releases toxic gases. The factories operate without valid permissions or adequate pollution control measures.
