NH-29 deterioration raises safety concerns in Nagaland

National Highway-29 connecting Kohima and Dimapur has deteriorated significantly, with extensive potholes, blocked stretches and drainage problems posing safety risks to motorists. Observations identified around seven strategic points where one side of the road was completely blocked, while at least 15 other locations were partially blocked. Potholes are widespread, with motorists finding hardly a kilometre of undamaged road.
Poor drainage and water accumulation have worsened conditions, increasing the risk of landslides. A particularly vulnerable stretch below Kezanu/Kimho shows active soil movement that could eventually cut off the Kohima-Dimapur corridor if left unaddressed. Vehicles frequently swerve between lanes to avoid damaged sections, raising collision risks.
The highway requires urgent road maintenance, drainage management and removal of obstructions, especially in landslide-prone areas. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are needed to prevent further deterioration and maintain connectivity.
