Odisha plans to hold road builders liable for pedestrian deaths from defective work

Odisha has proposed new rules that would make road contractors and engineers liable for pedestrian deaths or disabilities caused by faulty construction work. Under the proposed framework, those responsible could face prosecution under Section 198A of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The move aims to ensure accountability in road construction projects and protect public safety. The rules would apply when defective road work directly leads to harm to pedestrians.
